If there is not already a group in your department, why not start one up? To help you on your way, GSA has developed a Graduate Groups Affiliation Kit, which outlines all the steps you need to take to ensure that your group meets the affiliation requirements.

Overview of the steps to affiliation

  1. Read the GSA Affiliation Kit.
  2. Organize a meeting of interested students within your department or location. At this meeting, decide on a name, aims and a set of rules for the group (constitution).
  3. Decide on a date and time for your proposed group's Inaugural General Meeting (IGM). You need to give TEN academic days notice to GSA, and all your postgraduates.
  4. Before the Inaugural General Meeting, book a room, and make sure you notify GSA, notify all postgraduates in your department, and notify your department.
  5. At the IGM you must take down an attendance list and minutes, accept the Constitution, elect some officers, and pass motions to set up a bank account and resolving to affiliate to GSA.
  6. After the IGM, the minutes should be typed up and sent to who? along with your constitution and original, signed membership list.
  7. If your documentation is in order, GSA Council will then approve your affiliation at its next meeting. You will then be eligible to start applying for ongoing funding.
