Just a brief update regarding postgraduate eligibility for the Federal Government’s Household Stimulus Package.
CAPA has been in regular contact with the Government since details of the Household Stimulus Package were first announced (for example, see www.capa.edu.au/files/inline-files/CAPA_DPM_letter_Bonus_Eligibility.pdf).
CAPA understands the Government is still in the process of determining exactly how it will meet its commitments in this case (see www.capa.edu.au/ mediarelease/2009/stimulus_amendments).
As it stands, only those in receipt of Youth Allowance or Austudy can be confident that they will receive the Training and Learning Bonus (see www.capa.edu.au/mediarelease/2009/Bradley_Stimulus_Package).
CAPA has received a substantial amount of correspondence on this issue from individual postgraduates. These inquiries have played an important role in making a strong case to the Federal Government for more equitable treatment of postgraduates in the disbursement of the Stimulus Package.
A summary of examples of correspondence received by CAPA have been passed on to Government, and is publicly available from the CAPA website (see www.capa.edu.au/files/inline-files/Stimulus_Package_inquiry_examples.pdf).
CAPA has had constructive discussions with Government recently on postgraduate eligibility for the Training and Learning Bonus, with positive signs at least in regard to recipients of APA, APA(I) and university funded tax exempt awards.
I look forward to being able to update you on further details soon.
Cheers and all the best,
Nigel Palmer
